The Treasury, Petra, Jordan

Petra's Treasury carved into pink sandstone

About this puzzle

The Treasury in Petra, Jordan-also known as Al-Khazneh-is a famous archaeological site. The Nabataeans carved it into pink sandstone cliffs more than 2,000 years ago, using it as a royal tomb rather than a treasury. Its facade rises almost 130 feet and displays detailed columns, statues, and carvings that have survived the harsh desert for centuries. Stories add to the Treasury's mystery. According to one legend, Bedouins thought the urn on top contained gold, so treasure hunters shot at it. In reality, the urn is just solid sandstone, only appearing valuable.
